The Vegetarian Myth review
For someone who's so much against agriculture, Lierre Keith certainly enjoys straw men a lot. Some may not be pure straw men in the sense that some vegans (including obviously her past self) could hold these views. My point is not to argue about the definition of veganism, but to argue that her attempt to justify raising animals in order to kill them is fallacious.
Straw man #1: veganism = vegetarianism
The book is called the Vegetarian Myth, yet she tried and criticizes only a vegan diet.
Straw man #2: veganism = eating grains/cereal
Her whole criticism of agriculture may have some valid points, but it's off-topic. There are gluten-intolerant vegans who eat no grains, there is the raw food vegan diet which is also mostly grain-free, etc. She criticizes vegans for making the straw man argument that meat = industrial grain-fed meat (which it currently mostly is anyway), yet makes the same assumption that agriculture = current agriculture. But there may be more efficient ways of growing plants as well.
Straw man #3: veganism = jainism
She defines living creature widely, then proceeds to show that you can't live without killing other living creatures. Well thus defined, duh. When we get sick, we kill or try to kill viruses or bacteria that harm us. We kill insects who bother us or risk harming us. We kill wolves who threaten us. Do I need to explain the moral difference between killing a virus or wolf in self-defense and castrating piglets to improve the taste of their meat?
Straw man #4: veganism = anti-specism
She criticizes vegans for drawing a line somewhere, killing micro-organisms (or even "killing" vegetables) but not killing mammals etc. Well duh, yes, you gotta draw the line somewhere. If you can't see the moral difference between eating a seed and castrating piglets, again, sorry for you. Where does she draw the line? She doesn't say. What would be her case against cannibalism, murdering people for their meat? I do wonder, and good luck to build that case on her premises. Most people draw the line at cats and dogs. Horses are controversial. Vegans don't seem to have a clear cut line too, but they draw the line a bit further, and more consistently. My view is that the best approach we've come up with so far is some combination of 1) what she'd call specism being a priori more sympathetic towards animals that resemble us, ie share common characteristics with us, such as consciousness, feeling pain, taking care of your babies, having sex, etc. Try to make a table of characteristics for lettuce, pig and human, and see where it makes more sense to draw the line. 2) some form of the non-agression principle, however loose.
Incidentally, the drawing the line is also necessary for things like abortion or contraception. I don't think vegans ever condemned spilling thy seed on grounds of spermatozoids being alive.
On a related note, if you think all living things should be equal, than how would you justify our taking land from animals? Whenever you chop down a tree or build a house or whatever, you can be pretty sure some animals will either die directly or have less land available, etc. Human life has priority over animal life. Again, how do you jump from recognizing that to castrating piglets (or farming beef or whatever, I don't wanna fall into a straw man myself if she doesn't eat pork), I fail to see.
Straw man #5: veganism = no animal products
She defines animal products as anything that comes from animals, including cadavers and manure. Yes, she does. Then she discovers that manure and bones are necessary for gardening for good plant growth (compost seems to work pretty well for me, but that's irrelevant). Again, do I need to go into the moral difference between using horseshit and killing horses? My stance is clear: I don't want to be killed or harmed, but please help yourself to my shit. And when I die, please, by all means, use my organs to save lives, trade them, eat my body if you wish whether you're human or animal, dissect me for scientific experiments, and use the rest as fertilizer. By all means. She'd dismiss this as anthropocentrism, but I'm goint to assume that animals feel the same way, and if they're dead, they can't feel anything either way, so who cares.
Straw man #6: veganism = not having seen The Lion King
The author discovers the theory of circle of life, that plants eat dead bodies, we eat plants, etc. I saw that in The Walt Disney 1994 movie The Lion King. She refers to this as "adult knowledge" (sic). Again, she doesn't seem to grasp the difference between castrating piglets or dragging a cow to the slaughterhouse and plants decomposing our bodies once we're already dead.
My definition: Veganism = not killing or exploiting harmless animals unnecessarily. And if it's absolutely necesary to exploit them or kill them, do it as little and as painlessly as possible.
A concurring review from another vegetarian who also notes the straw man:
The reason why Keith thinks that the use of blood meal and bone meal in fertilizers threatens vegetarianism is that she attributes the views that she had when she was a vegan to all people who are vegetarians for moral reasons, seeing them as utopians trying to change the world and remove all death from it (p. 14, 16, 18). This is really setting up a straw man, though, for I have never seen my vegetarianism as part of a project to remove death from the world. My principle has always been that if it isn't necessary to kill animals for food, clothing, medicine, or other means of survival, then it is wrong to do so, and when it is necessary to kill them, then it should only be done to the extent that it is necessary and in a manner that inflicts as little suffering on the animal as is possible.
I'm willing to hear good cases against veganism, such as the empirical question of whether it's the healthiest diet. Lierre Keith doesn't make one so far.
This is from the first chapters of the book, and this post will be updated while I read along.
UPDATE 2011-08-20
If I tell you what does a vegetarian eat, you'll say... vegetables! (Unlike a humanitarian who eats humans, goes the joke. The word vegetables appears 8 times in her book. The word grain 163 times, agriculture 144...
UPDATE 2011-10-08
After having finished the book, some other fallacies committed by the author:
The conservative fallacy
That for some reason the way the earth is and the species that exist at year x are to be preserved, but not the status of the earth and species of the year x-1 or x+1.
The collectivist fallacy
That we should care about the survival of species. Only individuals can live, love, eat, suffer, die, etc.
The survival of species is only relevant in a "zoo" mentality, and vegans are against zoos.
The list of fallacies could probably go on and on. Then there could be the list of cherry-picked studies about questions like whether soy is healthy or not, whether vegans have more or less cancer etc.
My anthropocentrism beats yours fallacy
That somehow it's more "natural" to have meadows and wetlands rather than farmland, desert, or whatever, that somehow it's what the earth wants. No, it's what you want. Value is a human concept. The earth doesn't give a shit, we do.
The author despises civilization. I don't want wetlands with bugs, I want civilization. It's a matter of human preference.
Idiot of the Week: the anti-masculinity, anti-civilization, anti-porn feminist lesbian Lierre Keith, for all of the above ans also:
- for remaining 20 years on a low-fat low-prot diet that she recognized as hurting her body after two weeks
- for managing to include a chapter against masculinity in a book supposedly about vegetarianism.

Save the world
The problem is IQ.
I mean, imagine an anarchist were to blow up the government and tax offices, or something. With the current reign of idiots, they'd probably organize a collection to rebuild it. Nobel Prize and idiot Krugman would probably applaud, for the wrong reasons.
Now, anarcho-capitalists never wanted to win through violence, but through spread of ideas. But the ideas are there. Bastiat, Mises etc. Most of the theory exists. Sure, it can be improved in some areas (and I've contributed my share). But the main issue is the idiots not getting it.
The problem is idiots. Is the average IQ likely to improve? Hardly. Natural selection has all but disappeared. Sexual selection favors either assholes idiots, or smart gamers. But smart gamers want sex, not kids. Social Darwinism favors the poor and incompetent (and ugly), not the rich and able. Dysgenics, not eugenics, is what we have.
Solution? If you're an idiot, you're not reading this blog. If you are, get a vasectomy.
If you're not an idiot, donate your semen. Learn game and breed.

My kind of day
My 24-hour-awake day Saturday: eating nothing but high-fat raw vegan foods all day, I spent the whole day hiking and climbing. Felt AWESOME. Then I proceeded to a night of game (and some more night walking due to venue changes) as Trigger.
At round 5-o-clock in the morning, I was a bit tired to pursue a too-whorish-even-for-me HB9, so I gave away my perfectly calibrated opener to my wing man, guaranteeing him that it'll work: "All you need is a good spanking". The target's reaction was as I expected: "Why not?", then running after my wing man through the whole bar and pulling him by the arm to get his attention (and the spanking). He was so surprised that he failed to stack (or spank), yet I think that his respect for the Game (and Trigger's understanding, if not application, thereof) shall falter no more.

Lake parade
Possibly one of the worst places to game, at least in the evening. Basically the whole gig amounts to give girls a "dress like a slut" social permission, valid for the day. Result? From what I heard, easy to kiss-close early in the day, if that's your thing. But then, even 5s get cat calls and approaches from dozens of AFCs by the end of the day, and build up bitch shields that wouldn't shame a 9. Try to get through that - if you care to.

Game and truth
Should you lie about who you are? No.
You are who you are, and you want people to like you for who you are.
Be proud of everything you do, or don't do it. (If you're a Christian and therefore have trouble with this, getting your brain checked should be your first concern, not improving your game).
If you don't like who you are, change it. Whatever you don't like about yourself, change it.
But integrate what you like in others. If you don't like to hear other people's complaints or bragging, chances are they won't enjoy hearing yours.
DHVs and threads
You have to DHV, but embed it in an interesting way, as you would like to hear it were it someone else. You have to have interesting threads or routines, but they can be stuff that actually interests you. How would you like to be approached? Out of the blue deep shit questions. But embed it in an interesting way. Try the feeling angle.
Cope with imperfect information. Accept the fact that people are not aware of your qualities and your personality. You have to convey it to them (DHV), but remember that the conveying itself is part of it.
Reality
Nature, to be mastered, must be obeyed. -Francis Bacon-
Know your reality and accept it. If you deny reality it will hurt you. Don't weep over it. If you don't like something about reality, ignore it or change it.
Know your EP theory, but don't fall slave to it. Natural doesn't mean good. Mismatch doesn't mean we have to live like it were the Stone Age. Or eat that way, for that matter.
Know how fucked up the world is, understand the reasons. Change it if you can - but enjoy how great life can nevertheless be.
Like what you do and do what you like.
Embrace your feminine side to understand the way women think and feel, and what they expect of men. Then be the man you would want to have if you were a woman.

Truth
Hoppe :
any political philosophy that is not construed as a theory of property rights fails entirely in its own objective and thus must be discarded from the outset as praxeologically meaningless
Similarly, I submit that any theories regarding psychology or male-female interactions that are not grounded in evolutionary psychology can be discarded from the outset as utterly meaningless blabber. Including of course Ayn Rand's theories on that particular topic. There isn't much point in discussing the contents of said blabber, although EP and its extension game will give you insight into why such blabber is uttered.

Let's wait for sex
The shit test in its most purest form. Suppose a woman tells you she wants to wait for sex, under e.g. the pretense of some religious BS. She knows it's bullshit, naturally. Any alpha would naturally laugh at her denial of sex. He has other options, so she'd be depriving only herself and would never go through with it.
A beta, on the other hand... Naturally, she'll despise him more and more the longer he accepts her shit. This can end only by
- marriage and sex once or twice and then no sex again
- he'll catch her in bed with his best friend
- she'll have sex in a public restroom with some alpha asshole she's known for 20 minutes

Marriage and feminism as shit tests
Now to address these tough questions, we'll need to resort to both EP and game concepts, namely:
- shit test: a question where the right answer is not the one that is seemingly expected; a demand where doing what is seemingly expected is the wrong thing to do. Example: a woman asks you to do something, then thinks less of you for doing it.
- Number of theoretically possible offspring per year: female, one, male, a lot.
The latter is essential to EP. It explains differences in male-female parental investment, reproductive strategies (r/K), sex-drive, etc.
This means that men have by definition a lot more to lose from monogamy than women. Our current serial monogamy system is neither universal nor widespread nor has always been the norm, polygyny is still widespread.
The old social regime was a fragile combination of inequalities compensating other inequalities - men having more power in marriage (as they still do in a large part of the world), men being expected to pay but having more money, etc.
Feminism has entirely skewed this - women expect the same wages as men, not for the same work, but for easier work with less hours, and they still expect men to pay for everything. They expect men to still enter marriages, a losing arrangement from the start, but now with on top of that a legal right to basically steal their money on divorce, cuckold them and still expect them to pay for their bastard children, while taking the dad's actual children away from him.
This means that now by definition accepting that kind of contractual agreement implies a shit test failure and betaness. Add to this the fact that even that outrageously skewed in favor of women arrangement becomes superflous thanks to the state subsidizing of single moms. Add the fact of women empowerment through contraception or basically (most) women's utter freedom of having or not having a child, whatever the guy may think, and then legally binding some random guy to pay for it. Add all these, and the nice guy/beta provider/loyal husband becomes utterly superflous.
In this system the smart move for women becomes even more than ever to have sex with alphas only, then marry some rich lesser alpha and dump him after a few years and take his money.
So yeah, both marriage and feminism appear as mere shit tests, weeding out betas and favoring selection of alphas, as nature would have it, nothing new here.
But here's the interesting angle.
Feminism is a creation of the losers of sexual competition, the beta females so to speak.
We're talking about women who are either ugly or lesbian, and who have therefore given up on the possibility of getting any man, be it alpha or beta, to court them, marry them and voluntary impregnate them (or were not interested in the first place). Their agenda is therefore simple:
- get men to marry them
- Enforcing information asymmetry, in its more Western form, campaigning against hot babes on posters or any showing of the naked body of hot females.
- Making men more desperate, hopefully desperate enough to bang them, by banning prostitution and pornography
- force men to give them offspring
- A woman has full freedom of abortion, a man has not.
- Legally forcing men to pay for children even if they never wanted them and are not the fathers.
- if the above fails, is not desirable or as a follow-up to the above
- Force either men or "society" to pay for their single motherhood.
Now let's recall another thing:
Women tended to have two strategies: getting a cad (alpha male) for the best genes (short term) and getting a dad (beta provider) for the best care and support (long run). They still want an alpha for the short run, and now they'll want either an alpha or nobody for the long run. Since the alpha won't fall for their current long run he doesn't care either way.
So to summarize, this won't change much for alpha men, if anything they'll win (becoming even more interesting to all women). This won't change that much for alpha women, but they'll lose a little.
Beta women win, having furthered their agenda and increased their fitness. Beta men lose, becoming utterly superfluous, best they can hope for is to be temporarily used by a beta female, gaining a little sex, while drained of a lot of money, with zero fitness.
Thus Game as self-defense of the beta male against the plottings of the beta female.
Two more effects:
- men born into these feminist households are more likely to be betas, thus the number of betas increases.
- women become more empowered, more self-confident, less caring about their looks, therefore less attractive women available while more betas trying to get them, thus situation even worse for betas.
In conclusion, marriage has become a shit test due to feminism. Since feminists have made marriage so unattractive that women can but despise men who enter it, marriages don't last.
Feminism is partly a shit test and partly a fitness-redistribution scheme.
Since marriages are more unstable, there will be less children and less happy children.
Solutions?
No sense in crying over the past equilibrium, which was far from perfect. But we should realize that inequalities and advantages for men over women in marriage were there for a reason, namely to counterbalance the inherent female advantage in marriage. For instance, wives had a legal duty to provide sex to the husband (legally no rape within marriage), men had decision power, adultery was punished more harshly when done by women (which makes sense, a woman can know who the father is).
There's no need to impose this old balance at state-level though. Equality before the law is a good thing, and there's no need for stoning adulterous women now that we have paternity tests. But a new and better balance could and should be reached through free and improved marriage contracts, which would entirely replace current divorce, alimony etc. laws. Freely entered contracts that would reflect the new economic order and thus provide no financial benefits in case of divorce, mandate paternity tests, etc.

Why do your mom's dating advices suck?
Game guides will usually mention something along the lines of "do the opposite of your mom's dating advices, like be nice to her, buy her flowers, etc". Now why would mothers give bad advice to their sons? My theory so far is that it's another mismatch: sons raised by their mothers could be a recent phenomenon, so having a different attitude towards your son than towards other males (shit test them) would not provide a fitness advantage.

Applied EP: Game
Some EP basics and their Mystery Method translation:
- mismatch current civilization very short time span compared to Stone Age, thus we're adapted to the Stone Age. Mystery says: we're adapted to living in a tribe of 50 people 40 000 of years ago. Can be used to explain approach anxiety: in that kind of context, approaching the wrong girl could be quite costly, you got either your head bashed, or lost chances with a large part of the nubile women of your tribe
- handicap principle aka peacock theory if you can manage to dress like an idiot and be self-confident, you're more likely to be an alpha.
- copycat: preselection
So far though, Mystery seems to me to be too focused on precise tactics for picking up per se (and specifically, picking up particularly hot women in certain contexts), not enough on wider game. At one point he even says obvious bullshit like "you gotta use manipulative tactics for the first approach, then you're good to go and can get real sincere interacting", instead of realizing game is needed for everyday life and LTRs too. Kinda disappointing if you consider the EP foundation and the fact that EP does apply to and explain a lot more (sexual selection and natural selection), e.g. things like why sugar is bad for you, another mismatch example.
Now let's add another concept, brought by Game theory:
- shit test: a question where the right answer is not the one that is seemingly expected; a demand where doing what is seemingly expected is the wrong thing to do. Example: a woman asks you to do something, then thinks less of you for doing it.
And another one, essential for EP:
- Number of theoretically possible offspring per year: female, one, male, a lot.

The Blizzard Carrot
Blizzard games are mostly boring games where you don't have to think that much, just be patient. It can be relaxing, mind you.
An example was Diablo II. You didn't have to be good, you just had to be patient. Keep clicking on them monsters all day, and you'll end up in the top of the ladder.
From a game like StarCraft II, though, you'd expect something more. It's supposed to be a strategy game, the S in RTS. I have to say, it's not.
In a good game, the difficulty should be there naturally, you should have to think or show some peculiar skill to beat the game. The game's interface should be there to help you use your skills as directly as possible. The difficulty in a good game shouldn't come from imprecise controls, lack of save-game possibilities, or purpusefully tedious game controls.
StarCraft 2 could have been a good game, a game where you have to plan a strategy, manage your resources, etc. It's not.
- The introduction of the "carrot" system should be a warning that playing the game isn't rewarding in itself, but that instead you have to accomplish some boring achievements just in order to get the "Sarah Kerrigan" portrait.
- It's not about being smart, it's about being fast. In higher difficulty levels, you can't adjust the speed of the game. Most missions are simply about watching multiple fronts, keeping producing units, etc.
- The previous point wouldn't be so bad, if there weren't artificial difficulty added on purpose : you can queue up only that much units or research per building, and you have to pay them in advance. So basically you have to keep clicking back and forth from each building to build one unit after the other. Is this strategy? I don't think so.
- There's a lot of micro-management, your units being purpusefully stupid to force you to watch all of them. They'll stand and let themselves be burned by lava, they won't defend themselves against brood lords, etc. Does it require any skill or thinking to tell your units to get out of lava? No.
Of course, the huge success of games like The Sims should have warned us about what the public wants. In the near future, expect strategy games to be defined as games where you have to send your soldiers to the bathroom at regular intervals.

Second handers
They have no concern for facts, ideas, work. They're concerned only with people. They don't ask: “Is this true?” They ask: “Is this what others think is true?” Not to judge, but to repeat. Not to do, but to give the impression of doing. [...] Men without an ego. Opinion without a rational process.

What is wrong with people?
Random thoughts and musings...
- That Harry Browne quote, funny thing, I remembered it as If you're involved with the right people, the word compromise shouldn't even be in your vocabulary. I'm sure he wouldn't mind that wording, either. Anyhow, trying compromise just makes you realize that whenever you thought you weren't compromising enough, you were probably compromising too much already.
- Silver spoons and gold watches: more second-handers in action.
- Should we run our lives according to what petty thieves do? Not only the state, but bike thieves and the like?
There's two thing I thought of that religion has a good explanation for: clothes and languages. Both being intended as punishment. But then, wasn't some Jewish guy supposed to have died and redeemed all of Mankind's sins? So I mean, come on, don't you guys think we've been punished enough? Maybe, maybe, you could, like, stop perpetuating those two punishments? I mean come on guys, after a few thousand years, I'm sure the guy's forgiven you.
And even if we assume the rightness of keeping up with the clothes punishment, we invented pajamas, so what's supposed to be the fun with all the bow ties? I don't get it.
And I mean, coding multi-language CMSes is fun, but I mean come on, don't you think we've wasted enough ink and paper and human time on translations and shit?
Maybe, just maybe, we could like, all switch to English? Oh no, that would be too easy. Let's invent Esperanto or something and keep wasting time. It's not like we had any more useful stuff to spend it on, now is it?

Coping with the world
How many people could you meet in the course of a lifetime back in the Stone Age? Not that many, I guess. So remember the mismatch. We are not adapted to living in a world where you can get information about the suffering of millions of people around the world. So what can you do? If you were to actually be aware of the situation of the world, of the absurd and useless poverty and suffering of so many people (think protectionism, drug laws, etc), the fact that we could all be living in marble palaces or the like it it weren't for socialism, constructivism, etc., not to mention the likewise inhuman treatment of animals, the most sane reaction would probably be to go berserk.
So what can you do? Become insensitive, read about all that misery, pain and injustice and not actually do anything about it? Or spend your life trying to convince people that aggression is wrong? Why not become a kindergarten math teacher, too?
Or, try to live your life as it should be lived. As if there were no state. Enjoy the earth in all of its incredible beauty, the wonderful music that humans are able to produce, the (all too rare) great movies, and of course a vegan meal with a good wine. Above all, don't read the news. But of course, if you spend money the way you could hadn't the state robbed generation after generation of economic growth, you won't save that much.

If you wonder about the reasons behind the ugly mixture of cynicism and guilt in which most men spend their lives, these are the reasons: cynicism, because they neither practice nor accept the altruist morality - guilt, because they dare not reject it.

Can vegetarians not be vegans?
As I understand it, vegetarians should be against products that involve killing animals (meat), whereas vegans are not only against products that involve killing or maiming animals, but also against products that invole exploiting animals (wool, silk, horse riding, etc.).
Or to redefine veganism the way I see it: as an extension of the libertarian non-agression principle. I don't mind killing bugs that bother me, or killing bugs that constitute a danger to humans. Or killing wolves, for that matter, instead of "reintroducing" them. But it's definitely agression to steal bees' honey, lambs' wool, cows' milk, etc, even if they were not harmed in anyway whatsoever in the process.
But, is there room for a "moderate", "vegetarian" stance that would condemn only the murder or mutilation type of aggression? Now let's check some of the main contention points, which are the usual diet difference between a vegan and a vegetarian:
Cheese
Dried and cleaned stomachs of young calves are sliced into small pieces and then put into saltwater or whey, together with some vinegar or wine to lower the pH of the solution. After some time (overnight or several days), the solution is filtered. The crude rennet that remains in the filtered solution can then be used to coagulate milk. (source)
Milk
Dairy cows must be pregnant in order to give milk, and their female offspring either become dairy cows themselves or are slaughtered immediately. The males, however, are sold for beef or veal. The connection between the veal and dairy industries is undeniable, and it has been said that there is "a piece of veal in every glass of milk. (source and you know what veal is...)
Eggs
All egg production systems involve the disposal of unwanted male chicks as they are of no use to the industry. Male chicks from selectively bred egg-laying strains are not suitable for meat production and so are killed at 1-3 days old. There is a 50/50 chance of a male chick being born and it is estimated that around 30 million are destroyed annually by a number of permitted methods. (source)
Honey
In the US, 10 to 20 percent of colonies are lost over the winter. It is partly by accident and partly on purpose. Some beekeepers kill off their hives before winter. (source)
Wool
Mulesing entails running a sharp knife around the breech area about the size of a dinner plate, then ripping off the wool bearing skin within that area. (source + pink video)
So even if murder or mutilation were not okay but theft were, you should still be vegan.

Moral responsibility and the actions of others
Well, I disagree with Steve's latest post.
What's the difference between being the guy who tosses the live baby chicks into the grinder vs. paying someone else to do it for you?
This is a straw man, unless he's referring to the owner of the hen-chicks company. Other people, when they buy eggs, they just want eggs, they don't want anybody torturing anybody.
In the same way, when I buy soy, I don't ask anybody to
- steal the soy,
- murder someone to steal his soy,
- exploit animals in the soy production,
- put poison in the soy,
- use slave labor in the soy production,
- etc.
The moral responsibility for these actions relies first and foremost with the people acting in immoral or unjust ways. Now sure, it's debatable what part of responsibility a buyer has if he is aware of such practices. But still, the buyer has no duty to go double-checking everything and getting the information.
More interesting is the question whether the product can be produced ethically?
Unless we buy the eggs from the hens, I'd have to say no.

Kept alive
By books. Or maybe you need to use them as worlds to escape to in order to really appreciate them?
Finished reading another (ninth...) Dame Iacub book. I wouldn't have thought books on some obscure aspects of French civil law could be read as novels, and enjoyed as rare sparks of pure intelligence at work.
Then, got back to Balzac, and read quite quickly the great Le Père Goriot.
And then, back to the real world, filled with people who can't even write a one-line facebook status without at least two spelling errors (and I mean people my age, writing in their mother-tongue).
The worst being, those people do get jobs.
In other news, when newspapers actually do carry some information, it's usually way outdated, imprecise, merely introductive, useless. Evolutionary psychology has become trendy at last...
Should we rejoice that the world does work somehow, or cry in despair that it doesn't work as well as it could? I mean, having all those peoples of dubious intelligences work at productive tasks is probably not the least astounding accomplishment of The Market.
To me what's really amazing is that for every job that there is in the world, there's someone willing to do it. Someone goes 'Yes, I will stand in the tunnel breathing exhaust fumes watching the cars go by making sure every thing's okay.' Someone goes 'Yes, I will work behind the elephant with the big shovel, I will do it.' Doctors go 'Yes I will confine myself to one particularly objectionable part of the human body all day every day. I will do it.'
Seinfeld
And on the other hand, of course, we have unemployment, the very existence of which is outrageous, and all the destructive and useless pseudo-jobs, in a net of corruption and ties to the state so intricate that to untie it would be even harder than sticking to vegan wine.
I mean, let's face it, what is worse, getting a productive job that'll get taxed, proceeds of which taxes will be used to commit crimes both against you and against other people, or get an unproductive job working for the state?
And to think Balzac was already so critical of his 19th century society, wonder what he'd write today. If he could get the writer job, that is.

Enter the void
After several years of navets, finally a movie that'll give me a reason to return to a movie theatre?
It goes without saying that the film is violent, but its obsessive emphasis on sex and drugs -- to the point that most viewers are going to feel utterly bludgeoned by both -- makes it virtually unwatchable, especially at its unofficial "director's cut" length of 160 minutes. Commercial prospects seem remote, but its LSD and other drug-induced visual fireworks might ensure a long life as a cult film on DVD.

The psychology of meat-eating
So you get together with your meat-eating friends who hear about your veganism for the first time. And they go something like
- You, vegan? Don't tell me it's for the animals, is it???
- And they say that in such a derogatory manner that, yes, you're tempted to lie and invent some excuse. But you gather courage enough to say the truth, albeit quite modestly, in the lines of
- Well yeah, among other things, it's because of my thoughts on the ethics of killing animals
- And then comes the utterly surprising reaction, usually something along the line of
- Oh yeah, that's a pretty good reason, you know, I do agree with you, but I just like meat too much.
Fascinating, isn't it? And, truth be said, the most fascinating about it is that before turning vegan (soon about six months ago by the way), I used to ask the same kind of question and have the same kind of reaction. Yes. Actually, I had a talk along those lines with Bjørn Lomborg. Yes, I am ashamed of that now.
So my conclusion is this. Everybody does feel uncomfortable about the animal-killing industry, in the same way I've always felt. I don't pretend to be anymore compassionate than the average guy; in fact, I'd say I'm quite probably less compassionate. The only difference is that I took the time to think about what I already knew, and accept the consequences.
So why the aggressive stance against anyone else who knows the same things as we do, but accepts the consequences we don't want to accept? Well I daresay, the answer is quite obvious if you're familiar with either The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged, in other words, the work Aunt Ayn has done on the question. We want others to help us believe in a lie we don't believe in ourselves, by pretending they do. We want their approval for the pretending. We want to replace our perception of the truth by the beliefs of others. So of course, we're angry at them if they don't play the game. But, at the same time, we do know the truth, so at some point, if they state it too plainly, we cannot but stop the hypocrisy and agree.

Why do men have a "WTF" look when they see female executives
Women know what men want, men know what men want, what do we want? We want women, that's it! It's the only thing we know for sure, it really is. We want women.
Seinfeld
Men try to have a good career, put in a lot of hard work, make a lot of money, and be executives, bosses. Why? To impress women, because women care about that in a man.
Now you'd say, so symetrically, women would want to become executives in order to impress men, right? Well, the thing is, men don't give a damn about that. Trust me, we don't.
Women need to like the job of the guy they're with. If they don't like the job, they don't like the guy. Men know this. Which is why we make up the phony, bogus names for the jobs that we have. “Well, right now, I'm the regional management supervisor. I'm in development, research, consulting...” Men on the other hand — if they are physically attracted to a woman — are not that concerned with her job. Are we? Men don't really care. Men'll just go, “Really? Slaughterhouse? Is that where you work? That sounds interesting. So whaddaya got a big cleaver there? You're just lopping their heads off? That sounds great! Listen, why don't you shower up, and we'll get some burgers and catch a movie.”

The sanction of the victim
That looter from the State Science Institute was scared when I refused to help him pretend that he was just an honest buyer of my Metal. [...] Why should he have been scared? He has the guns, the jails, the laws—he could have seized the whole of my mills, if he wished, and nobody would have risen to defend me, and he knew it—so why should he have cared what I thought? But he did. It was I who had to tell him that he wasn't a looter, but my customer and friend. That's what he needed from me. [...] they want us to pretend that we see the world as they pretend they see it. They need some sort of sanction from us.

His ignorance was as remarkable as his knowledge. Of contemporary literature, philosophy and politics he appeared to know next to nothing. Upon my quoting Thomas Carlyle, he inquired in the naivest way who he might be and what he had done. My surprise reached a climax, however, when I found incidentally that he was ignorant of the Copernican Theory and of the composition of the Solar System. That any civilized human being in this nineteenth century should not be aware that the earth travelled round the sun appeared to me to be such an extraordinary fact that I could hardly realize it.
“You appear to be astonished,” he said, smiling at my expression of surprise. “Now that I do know it I shall do my best to forget it.”
“To forget it!”
“You see,” he explained, “I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it. Now the skilful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic. He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order. It is a mistake to think that that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend upon it there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones.”
“But the Solar System!” I protested.
“What the deuce is it to me?” he interrupted impatiently: “you say that we go round the sun. If we went round the moon it would not make a pennyworth of difference to me or to my work.”

Without our bodies, what would we do?
As Aunt Ayn would put it,
A body without a soul is a corpse, a soul without a body is a ghost
But do ghosts exist? I mean, what would a ghost, or a soul in heaven for that matter, or a soul transferred into a computer, actually do?
I mean, let's face it, we spend our lives satisfying our animal instincts, don't we?
In this country, you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women
Scarface
And in the meantime, we spend some of the money on food so that we don't starve.
I'm sure you can imagine a lot of cool things you could do as a ghost/soul, not relevant to actual survival. Play computer games for all eternity. Check the girl's locker rooms.
But this is falling right into the wrong perspective fallacy. Let's illustrate:
Jennifer: Meg you seem so sad; today is a happy day!
Meg: I know it's just that... I really like that guy over there but he doesn't even know I exist! He must think I'm a total dog!
Jennifer: Oh that is so not true
Meg: Then what is it?
Jennifer: He's a Eunuch.
Meg: Really?
Jennifer: Sure! All the guys here have been castrated; it's cool!
Guy 1: Hey do you think that girl's hot?
Guy 2: No!
Guy 1: Me neither!Family Guy
That's what's so illogical about the smurfs... what's the point of living if you don't have a dick?
Donnie Darko
Everything we do that is not directly linked to survival is indirectly linked to survival. Computer games are survival simulations.
No flesh, no survival. No survival, no fun. You can't live if you're not alive. Well, duh.

2P2M
The double standard fallacy - a cousin of the nirvana fallacy and of the precautionary principle fallacy - consists in criticizing one option for not showing obvious perfection, while not submitting the other option to the same criteria.
A rational approach would be "something is better than what we have if it is better than what we have". The double standard approach is "something is better than what we have if it is perfect, however crappy what we have might be".
In other words: "the current system may sure suck, but unless you present a new system that will be perfect, and shall provide free ponies for everyone, too, I'd rather stick with the current shite, thank you very much".
The usual application of the fallacy is against anarchists: "oh yeah? And how would the court system work in anarchy, eh?". Unless you can provide a perfect explanation, statism is deemed superior. Of course, a court system is not something that can be explained that easily, and the person commiting the fallacy would be most likely unable to explain to you how the current court system works - and if it does work at all, for that matter. And even if you were, say, to point to the fact that even now private international arbitration courts are operating and doing a much better work than the current FDD courts, the statist won't really care - he doesn't care about the truth, he cares about "winning" an argument.
And now I'm getting used to a new application - against vegans. As I've already mentioned, trying to apply some sort of non-agression principle in relation to all animals seems to me not a perfectly finished solution, but certainly to make a lot more sense than the dominant vague ideology.
If someone wants to criticize it, the rational approach would be, either to present a better solution than both the status quo and my proposal (for instance, a fruitarian might argue that plants should not be "killed" either and that therefore only fruits should be eaten), or, to show why the status quo makes more sense than my proposal, or indeed, if he craves perfection, to prove how the current status quo is perfect (good luck with that one). Alas, this is not the kind of argument you shall hear. Instead, you'll hear ad nauseam questions like "what about lettuce, ain't that lettuce been killed?" or "what about tomatoes, don't tomatoes suffer as well"?, asked not by fruitarians or breatharians but by your average omnivore. The stance being basically "if you can't present to me a perfect answer to why it's wrong to eat animals but ok to eat lettuce, I'll keep on eating both lettuce and animals". Of course, the omnivore would be quite unable to present even a vaguely plausible case for "why it's ok to eat animals but wrong to eat humans".

Back to basics
Once in a while, you gotta write about the things that really matter. So here we are: inconsistencies in Seinfeld. The list may be updated if I find more.
- ELAINE (to Jerry): Do you go in the shower? JERRY: No, never. ELAINE (to Kramer): Do you? KRAMER: I take baths. (season 5, episode 17, The Wife)
- KRAMER: I just took a bath, Jerry. A bath? JERRY: No good? KRAMER: It's disgusting. I'm sitting there in a tepid pool of my own filth. All kinds of microscopic parasites and organisms having sex all around me. (season 7, episode 16,The Shower Head)
- ESTELLE: (screaming) Oh my God! (she enters holding a small packet) This was in our bed. FRANK: (taking the packet) What is this? (accusingly to George) A prophylactic wrapper?! (season 5, episode 10, The Cigar Store Indian)
- KRAMER: Hey Frank, you got two beds in here. FRANK: That's right. That's me on the left. KRAMER: So, you sleep in separate beds. FRANK: Thirty years ago, we came to an agreement. It was the only way I could get some rest. (season 8, episode 12, The Money)

Animal Rights
I see 4 consistent possibilities:
- Animals have no rights and are therefore to be considered things. Abolish all laws on zoophilia or animal abuse. Get a dog, have sex with it, slowly torture it, and then cook it.
- A coherent hierarchy. Remains to be constructed.
- Animals have the same rights as humans. Not sure would be applicable. Besides, as usual with any stance based on rights that only a certain category of people/things/plants/animals has, a usual question is, where to draw the limit? A difficult question to be sure. But then again, where to draw the limit about who/what is and isn't a human being with rights? Think endless debates about abortion.
- A coherent set of rules, such as some version of the Non Agression Principle.
Solution # 4 makes the most sense to me. The current legal or pseudo-moral solutions are obviously utterly inconsistent. There is no clear-cut definition of human in our societies. In China (at least...) killing babies used to be considered ok, I think. In French Law a baby might be aborted under some legal conditions as long as it's not born - that is, you kill it first, then give birth to a dead baby, but if you were to kill it right after it were born you'd be legally a criminal. Other countries have limits on the delay in which abortion is legal. Other countries ban it altogether.
The situation is even worse with animals. There are bans on zoophilia, or even zoophilia images (like in Switzerland), while at the same time artificial insemination of turkeys is fine, as well as for that matter castrating pigs, or even cats. (Of course, our societies in general have a problem with sex, so it's not that unsurprising that fucking animals can be considered worse than killing them. In France for instance, people get on average more jail time for rape than for murder. Yes, I'm using France examples because Marcela Iacub has studied that so well.)

I knew a woman who paid $150 for a fifteen-lesson course. After sitting through the first three lessons, bored stiff, she decided it was a mistake. I suggested she spend her Wednesday evenings in a more profitable way (such as with me).
"I can't do that," she said. "I have a hundred and fifty dollars tied up in it; I have to see it through."
She was saying, in effect, "Since I've already wasted my money on this, I'm now going to waste my time, too."

polyamor, polygyny, parallel monogamy
Where are you living? Are you here? Are you on this planet? It's impossible. It can't be done.
Thousands of years people have been trying to have their cake and eat it too. So all of a sudden the two of you are going to come along and do it. Where do you get the ego? No one can do it. It can't be done.
Oh, you know what you're like? You're like a pathetic gambler. You're one of those losers in Las Vegas who keeps thinking he's gonna come up with a way to win at blackjack.
Seinfeld
But I still have the capacity to share more attention and affection than Erin can receive. If I give out as much as I feel inclined to give, she eventually starts rejecting it.) et avec plus de moeufs.

- Laisser un long moment

Cloven hooves and cud-chewing

Ten reasons not to be vegan
- If you go vegan, you'll need less sleep. Less sleep means more time when you have to face your pathetic live - you don't want that.
- Meat production allows for all the little joys of life - castrating pigs, kicking turkeys in the head - and how sore life would be without these.
- Meat, dairy products and eggs are all full of good ol' cholesterol and other such healthy ingredients - excellent way of being over with your life sooner.
- Slaughterhouse. You just gotta love the word - slaughterhouse. Even the name of a song. Lovely place to meet people and make friends.
- Going vegan is probably the single most significant step you can take to help protect the environment. But why would you want to do that? You'll look way more cool if you pretend to be helping it instead, by doing counter-productive things like most of recycling.
- Feel light and full of energy after eating? Nah. Feel heavy! Spend the rest of the day digesting. You got nothing else to do.
- Killing animals might be fun, but receiving proper training in killing members of your own species is all the more essential. By becoming vegan, you'll be deprived of it, and the great pride of serving your country which goes with it.
- What would happen to those most useful members of our society, customs officers, if they couldn't stop you when crossing a border to ask "Got Milk?"?
- As the great protector of animals in the same sense that you should be - hypocrite - put it: " I don't know. But I'm sure it had parents."
- 99% of people are not vegan. Those are the same people who make the right choices in terms of politics, morality and culture. How could they be wrong about what they eat?

Does God exist? Who gives a shit?

- d'abord, bien sûr, participation au concours du groupe facebook le plus débile (Relevons tout de même que même sur FB il y a encore un peu d'espoir.) ;
- puis illustration des « contre » absurdes, vous remarquerez dans ce cas que la page du groupe elle-même affirme que « C'est surtout sur la côte Est qu'on appâte les requins avec des chiens ou des chats vivants, des actes de barbarie sévèrement réprimés par la loi lorsque les tortionnaires sont pris en flagrant délit. » ;

Compassion, hypocrisy, and veganism

Egoists vs second-handers
Even the most sanely selfish actions can be undertaken for all the wrong reasons. Another example: healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle, as part of personal development, is an inherently selfish choice, and yet, normal people manage to do it for all the wrong reasons, namely, for others.
Recall the best scene of The Book, where Keating announces his wife that he wants to erect a house “of his own”. (By the way, the best scene of We The Living is the one where Kira goes to see a Soviet picture with Andrei.)
Rational, selfish, and growing human beings make healthy lifestyle choices for themselves. Normal people, if they do so, do so for others:
- as a way of controlling others, the worst second-hander being the one who seeks power over others, in randian terminology, or in my own, because in their personal development they are still in the baby-stage in which they are unable to grok the difference between human beings and toys, since making “good” choices gives them a sort of superiority on others, and gives them excuses for forcing their lifestyle upon others;
- to appear good or interesting in the eyes of others, since normal people have no respect for themselves, they value what others think above what they think themselves (or again, check Aunt Ayn's crystal clear explanation in The Book).

Du besoin d'avoir un avis
It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a “dismal science”. But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.
Rothbard

One of the major challenges with dietary change is that the direction of improvement takes you far away from average because the average diet is pure crap. This creates a risk of disconnecting from other people as you continue to grow in order to avoid succumbing to social drag.

- Les bruits de niveau 1, qui occupent vos sens mais relativement peu votre esprit (exemple : un bruit de perceuse ou de tondeuse à gazon) ;

- No Country For Old Men : navet
- There Will Be Blood : navet

Polyphasic sleep redux
Some advices mostly. This new attempt went much better than the previous, and I think the main difference is diet.
- Quit tea, coffee, coke, etc., before attempting polyphasic sleep.
- Switch to a light, healthy diet before attempting polyphasic sleep.
- Switch to an overall zen lifestyle, don't get aggravated. Stop reading the news. (Of course, you should do these anyway, whether you intend to switch polyph or not. )
- Never, ever, sleep more than 20 minutes. If you feel tired or sleepy once you wake up afterwards, fight it. Get up. Any extra sleep you get right after the 20 min sleep will make you fell much worse. Once you win over the initial urge to go right back to sleep, you'll be all right.
I had to stop this time because my eyes were too tired from all the extra computer hours, but apart from that everything was going fine...

GEORGE: Yes, yes of course. The Pensky file. Ho ho, can't wait to sink my teeth into that. Wow that Pensky. Well we'll straighten him out.
(George walks into his office. He sets down his briefcase and coat and sits down. He quickly flips through the folder, then drops the folder on his desk with a big thud.)
(Camera shot at the clock on his wall. The clock says 9:00.)
(A moment later, the clock flips to 5:00.)
(George puts the folder in his briefcase. He picks up the briefcase and his coat and he walks out.)
...
JERRY: So what did you do there all day?
GEORGE: They gave me the Pensky file.

GEORGE: Mr. Pensky? Of the Pensky file?

Assumer
Nobody put a gun to your head.

"Don't you see?" Roark was saying. "It's a monument you want to build, but not to yourself. Not to your own life or your own achievement. To other people. To their supremacy over you. You're not challenging that supremacy. You're immortalizing it. You haven't thrown it off--you're putting it up forever. Will you be happy if you seal yourself for the rest of your life in that borrowed shape? Or if you strike free, for once, and build a new house, your own? You don't want the Randolph place. You want what it stood for. But what it stood for is what you've fought all your life."

Kramer: Really?
Jerry: We were talking about our lives and we both kind of realized we're kids. We're not men.

Jerry: Yes. We did.
Kramer: Yeah, well, let me clue you in on something. There isn't.2008-09-19

(I can't be with someone like me, I hate myself!

Ou l'Iran, aussi : Tehran's police chief, who was in charge of fighting vice, caught Nude With 6 Women

- Lager Hell, Denner : 55 centimes

The first girl I talked to seemed bewildered by the question. She literally had never thought about that before. She was willing to stand in front of these horrible pictures and accuse people of murder and genocide, yet she had never even thought what type of penalties women would get if this was made illegal. She looked like a deer caught in the headlights, so I let her go to ponder just what in the hell she's doing out here.

Ça m'a toujours dérangé.
Et que « the advent of gay marriage would mean extending the reach of the State over the private lives of individuals ».
An earthworm expects to find a law, a printed law, for every circumstance. Even have laws for private matters such as contracts.
Robert A. Heinlein - The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress

As his empire grew, Hughes used every trick conceivable to avoid paying taxes to the government. In the early years of Hughes Aircraft, Hughes attempted to move his company from Southern California to Nevada in an effort to take advantage of Nevada's low tax rates. Ultimately, Hughes donated all his stock in Hughes Aircraft to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, thereby turning the military contractor into a tax-exempt charity.
Although Hughes lived in his own home in California for many years, he later came up with the idea of living in hotels as this enabled him not to have a legally declared residence in any state which would require him to pay personal income taxes. Shortly after Hughes began living in hotels with no state as his official residence, legislation was passed that any person living in a state 180 days or longer was subject to personal income tax during that time period in that state. Then, Hughes would live in a given hotel for just under 180 days, before moving to another hotel for just under 180 days, and so on. His extremely creative efforts to avoid taxes were successful; even after his death, the states of California and Texas were unable to collect inheritance taxes since it could not be proven that he was a legal resident of either state.
Within weeks of taking over, Hughes had dismissed three-fourths of the work force; production was virtually shut down for six months as Hughes ordered investigations into the politics of all remaining studio employees. Completed pictures would be sent back for reshooting if the stars, especially female, weren't presented to his liking, or if a film's anticommunist sentiments weren't sufficiently blatant.
Offscreen, Robert Mitchum's arrest and conviction for marijuana possession—he would serve two months in jail—was widely assumed to mean career death for RKO's most promising young star, but Hughes surprised the industry by announcing that his contract was not endangered.

Individuals
« How far ahead of me the artist was », commenta Woody Allen à propos de ce film.

The Fountainhead
Gail Wynand sat at his desk in his office and read the proofs of an editorial on the moral value of raising large families. Sentences like used chewing gum, chewed and rechewed, spat out and picked up again, passing from mouth to mouth to pavement to shoe sole to mouth to brain...

Ignorance
It's becoming harder and harder for me to read anything written by people that do not understand morality, economics, or evolutionary psychology (the topics of this blog). I mean, once you understand those things, reading things by people who don't is like watching a movie by someone who knows how to make good movies, but has no idea about basic maths, and insists on having his characters explain to you that 2 plus 2 equals 5. I mean, if you don't know something, just write about something else. As Rothbard would put it,
It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a 'dismal science.' But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.
So some recent disappointments :
- Moorcock on equilibrium between good and evil (The Runestaff)
- Wilde on punishment (De Profundis)
- Rand on sex (interview)
- the reactionary Zemmour on roughly half of what he says (Le premier sexe)
- Graham on food (You Weren't Meant to Have a Boss)

Even ranking officials have run out of their (rationed) food supply

What am I doing here
On my block, a lot of people walk their dogs, and I always see them walking along with their little poop bags, which to me is just the lowest function of human life. If aliens are watching this through telescopes, they're gonna think the dogs are the leaders. If you see two life forms, one of them's making a poop, the other one's carrying it for him, who would you assume was in charge?

Objectivist morality vs. sacrifice pseudo-morality
When you do something for somebody, do you do it because and when you want to, because you feel you have to, or because you expect something in return? (See also Satanic Bible, ch. 7, for a similar discussion.)
The first impulse is that of the objectivist morality, the two others are those of the sacrifice pseudo-morality. In objectivist morality, when you say "Sure, I'll do it, no problem at all, with pleasure," you really mean it. In sacrifice pseudo-morality, you think "oh fuck, another unpleasant request, life sucks", and still say "Sure, I'll do it, no problem at all, with pleasure". According to sacrifice pseudo-morality, it's normal to hate doing something, but do it by sacrificing yourself for others - and then expecting others to do the same for you, or for someone else.
Life sucks, death is cool is the basic premise of sacrifice pseudo-moralities... Again, notice that pseudo-morality is based on hypocrisy and a negative view of life, whereas true morality is based on sincerity and a positive view of life.
In objectivist morality, you don't owe anything to anybody, and nobody owes anything to you. Therefore, you can be grateful to somebody for giving you something, but you cannot be resentful to somebody for refusing to give you something. A sacrifice pseudo-morality follower will grant you a zero or a +1 at most for doing something for him, and a -5 for refusing to do it, whereas an objectivist will give you zero for refusing to do it, and a +1 or +2 for doing it.

What is the meaning of life?
Whatever you think it is, rethink it: any end I can think of so far can be rephrased as either drugs, or spiritual. Being successful, rich, in love, happy, etc? Mere chemical or biological or whatever reaction. Whether it's due to genetic programming or the Matrix, what's the difference? Having kids? Being proud of them? Not disappearing with your death? Same thing. If you're dead, by definition you can't experience what's happening. Therefore, you don't give a shit. If you do, what you do care about is the feeling that the thought of the future gives you, right here, right now. Drugs, again.
What's with the spiritual then? Well, that's what would be interesting. Most things that try to pass on as such are actually drugs related goals too.

Religion, or God, is an utterly useless hypothesis. What single thing, ever, could it possibly help us explain or understand? I'm in good health? God must have wanted it to be so. I'm sick? Why of course, God decided I should be sick. Have two feet? The Almighty must have his reasons for granting them to me. Had I three feet, idem. Etc. If you're looking for answers to anything, you might as well toss a coin.

Social vs. technological mismatch
Are the reasons of the madonna-whore dichotomy evolutionary, social, or even explainable by psychoanalysis?
I guess the roots of it are hard to identify, but it is easy to see how the dichotomy can endure. Suppose a certain system of thought, that for instance contains such ideas as "sex is bad" (the usual pseudo-morality). Suppose too that this is the dominant ideology. And suppose that our genetic programming pushes us all towards doing things we were taught are bad. What, then, is the result?
Some people, perhaps because some reasons have led them to really think about it (for instance because they are not happy with their status within the genetic and social Matrix), will draw the right conclusions from that clash and become #3s.
Others will get so lost by that confusion that they will abandon the fight altogether and become #2s.
But within #1s, we have all those that still accept that framework. Among those, we might have those that are strong enough to do what they think is good, and those that are not.
Which, again, leads us to the dreaded correlations.

Mismatch social, suite

Princess
Another plank to the understanding of the Matrix...
Princess. No coincidence that same word is used here.
So the other night we were at that chébran place in Piogre. We somehow managed to sit at a table with world-class lassies. So you guys rockers, she says. Nah, we ain't rockers. What are you? Me asks. We? We princesses she replies. And she was. Her skin was obviously photoshopped. Unapproachable and unaffordable.
So what's the point? The point is, beautiful women become arrogant, ignorant and superficial, because they don't need to be kind, smart or interesting. They know too well that they can treat people like shit, but everyone will lick their boots nonetheless. They don't need to study, read or whatever. All they gotta do is spend their day photoshopping their skin.
So what to do? Well the basic instinct with princesses is to treat them like, well, princesseses. To kneel at their feet and offer yourself in eternal serfdom to them. Why doesn't that work, whereas the Soral method does? The answer is hard to grasp yet obvious: princesses don't sleep with peasants. In a world where perception of things matters a lot more than the things themselves, you are a princess because you're perceived as one, and you are a peasant if you act like one.
So as long as you treat her as the princess she is, you shall be merely a peasant to her. To break the spell, you gotta stop being nice to her. Treat her as shit.
*But then again, do you really want that kinda bitch?
*
Stewie: Hey, babe, we going out Saturday night?

Stewie: Oh yeah? I'll tell you what you're into. Being ugly.
Olivia: Stewie, you're being mean.
Stewie: No. If I was being mean, I would have said, “Oh hey, Ray Liotta. Is Olivia home? Oh, wait. You're Olivia. I thought you were Ray Liotta, because your skin has the texture of a decorative autumn squash.”
[Olivia begins to weep.]
Stewie: So, I'll pick you up at seven?

Listening to
Röyksopp again!
Only this moment, and of course Sparks.
Also to Don't let it bring you down, however can't find an entirely satisfactory version. Don't like Neil Young's voice that much but the guitar's good. Annie Lennox cool voice and nice way of singing it, but what the fuck's with the lame drums, the co-singers and the preposterous dancing? (The drums sound like, when you get a cheap electric piano and you press a button to get a three-notes-repeating default accompaniement...)
Maybe Tina Dico should do a cover of that one.

Work and talking with normal people
Sometimes, he was asked to show his sketches; he extended them across a desk, feeling a contraction of shame in the muscles of his hand; it was like having the clothes torn off his body, and the shame was not, that his body was exposed, but that it was exposed to indifferent eyes.
Relate this to the best scene of one of my favorite movies (just posting the precise moment, but of course the whole scene is just perfect, like most of the movie):
- Howard has to read the trade pieces, Mom, because he's designing a new aeroplane.
- Oh, really? Do tell.
- Well...
...it's quite exciting, actually.
It's a spy plane for the Air Corps.
A twin-engine plane with some...
...I must admit, some rather unique design features.

The sleeper must awaken
Polyphasic sleep, pros and cons.
The point of the thing, and the main good thing about it:
Time. Mornings start to exist once again (imagine that, days actually don't start with the sun somewhere right above your head... who'd have thought!), and you actually have time to read during the night. In addition, the fact that you are sleeping less to get things done gives you an itching to do get the things done, so you're more productive indeed.
(If you're the kind of people who'd say "oh but what would I do with all that time": get a life. But then again, that kind of person does not read this blog.)
Technical issues:
The alarm clock. The thing is, you need to sleep 20 minutes, 30 max, but if you're not sure how long you're gonna need to fall asleep, the best of course would be an alarm clock that would auto activate. But an alarm clock that would be in terms of delay and not time of awakening would be cool, like a big alarm clock that you could just hit on the top, and it would activate, and you'd deactivate it by hitting it once it wakes you up 20 minutes later, and then reactivate it the same way. So I guess a special alarm clock would help a lot.
Speaking of alarms clock, sometimes fail waking up for unknown reasons, that is, must have turned off the alarm clock but don't even remember it, which is kinda scary.
Bad:
- Social life or polyphasic sleep, it's either or. If you have to sleep every four hours, you just can't go out, period. Even going shopping is troublesome... For me the issue has been that even going out once a week, say on saturday, which would seem reasonable, screws your rhythm, and actually does so at the very moment you were starting to get adjusted.
- Having to cut off often in the middle of working on some code sucks, too.
- Especially in the day, even when sleeping good time can feel "tête dans le cul" after waking up sometimes. Taking a shower or swimming in pool does help.
- You have to quit tea. :-(

Demographics have shown that not only are FireFox users a somewhat small percentage of the internet, they actually are even smaller in terms of online spending, therefore blocking FireFox seems to have only minimal financial drawbacks, whereas ending resource theft has tremendous financial rewards for honest, hard-working website owners and developers..

To sleep, perchance to dream?
Considering polyphasic sleep.
Another nice quote on the issue:
"What about me?" Sophie said. "I am eight".
"You is not eight at all," the BFG said. "Human bean babies and little chiddlers is spending half their time sleeping, so you is only four."
"I'm eight," Sophie said.
"You may think you is eight," the BFG said, "but you has only spent four years of your life with your little eyes open. You is only four and please stop higgling me. Titchy little snapperwhippers like you should not be higgling around with an old sage and onions who is hundreds of years more than you."(Roald Dahl, The BFG)

How to compare?
The difference between Paasche and Laspeyres indices* highlights the problem of comparing two states of the world, with changes both in prices and quantities. Scitovsky ("A Note on Welfare Propositions in Economics", 1941) applied a similar reasoning to welfare economics.
The issue is analogous to thinking about how it would feel to be, say, rich, famous, married, dead, a woman, etc. The fact is that you can only think about it from your perspective of poor, not famous, single, alive, a man, etc., and you can never know how it would really be, because if you actually were there, you would be evaluating it from the perspective of rich, famous, married, dead, a woman, etc. which might be entirely different. Since in that case you can't isolate the two (the change in the actual state of the world and the change in how you perceive it), it's like comparing two states of the world with both different prices and baskets of goods.
*Paasche: comparing prices of the t1 basket in t0 and t1
Laspeyres: comparing prices of the t0 basket in t0 and t1.2007-06-15

Mismatch
An excellent illustration of the second mismatch...

- Genes and technology. Sexual selection takes time. Like, hundreds of thousands of years you know. Technology on the other hand's been evolving pretty fast, for the last couple of millenia anyway. Especially relevant for this case, thing of all the nice things (like guns) that have made females less dependent on males for resources and protection. Seeking a strong jerk to protect you could have been the smart thing to do back in 'da Stone Age, babe, but that time is long since gone. And you might know it, but your genes don't. Tough. (Ever wondered why girls tend to be friends with nice guys and get fucked by bad guys? Well, think: It's the best way to get protection from both.)
- Social rules and technology. Stoning adulterous women doesn't make sense now that we've got DNA tests.* And as for Delayed Marriage and Abstinence-until-Marriage (or killing baby girls, whatever your fancy), well, you know, since the days of the demographic transition, we've got like, contraception, you know. Pity no one told Bush and his bearded pals, though.
*Oh come on, you get the point even though "we" stopped stoning them a bit earlier than that... And do I really have to point out that I'm not talking justice nor morality here, but reasons, that is, the fact that some practice was introduced at some point in time because it was in someone's rational interest, or rather, for this case, in line with their genetic programming. So don't look at me like this, folks, I didn't write that code.

Who are thy enemies?
- Uncertainty, obviously, and my Coping with uncertainty has been in my blog's menu for quite some time. Does economics help you fight it, or merely understand it?
- Mismatch could be the other. Does evolutionary psychology help you fight it, or merely understand it? And frankly, does understanding it actually help, if you're not ready to take it as normative, regarding how you should act?

Compromise
Ok. Now let's see what your problem is. Your problem is you don't like to compromise. Specifically, you don't want want to have to choose between your values (doing what is right) and your desires (doing what you want to).
Of course, most people have to compromise. Suppose a married guy who thinks adultery is wrong. As long as he doesn't want to be unfaithful, he's in harmony. But if he does, he has to choose, he has a problem.
This question could of course lead us to the whole issue of whether we do what is good because that's what we want to do, or because of the consequences of doing it or not doing it. Is a person a good person if he loves to kill, but is just a bit too scared of going to hell to do it?
Your other problem in relation with the first is that you care too much about sincerity. (In other words, that you dislike information asymmetry so much.)
And your third problem is (but maybe they're all the same one formulated differently, aren't they) that you don't like to act "instrumentally" (can't find a better word, but you get the point). You like to do things because you want to, not to get something. You like to be kind, make gifts, buy things etc. for other people because, when and if you want to, not to get something in exchange.

Bouclage du modèle
- In a world of information asymmetry (under perfect information the market would be perfectly efficient and there would be no celibacy), what matters is not resources, but perception of resources. That's where confidence steps in, obviously. (And don't forget the importance of correlations.)
- Rational (explainable) reasons doesn't mean the reasons have to be conscious. Biological/chemical reactions (such as love) have biological/chemical causes (genetic programming). The gorgeous blonde playmate who marries the rich old guy and says she loves him can be sincere - it's just that the money (or resources in general, including time at the bottom of the production process) is what causes the love (or desire).
- Price/cost is not value. You can make money ("The Rules", anyone?) writing on the confusions and correlations of the two, though. (By the way, international trade makes markets more efficient, as always.) And correlations there are, at least perceived: a high cost can be perceived as a signal of high value. Incidentally, M-Budget can be interpreted as an example of the converse: lowering value (ugly packaging, anyone?) in an attempt to lower the perceived price. (Price, cost and value from the perspective of the buyer.) Another example would be paid newspapers, loathing free newspapers, while of course their major source of revenue is also advertisement... The price's role seems to be more to signal value than to provide revenue.

Language
It is said that Eskimos have dozens of words for snow. Whether this be true or not, you get the point: the members of a specific culture have words for things that matter for them.
Now think about what "our" culture has words for. Would a reasonable person really think of inventing such words as miscegenation or lascivious?

Categories and correlations
- Good citizens, claiming to obey pseudo-morality and laws. The vast majority of people. Although some might be "genuine good citizens", most are usually guilt-ridden hypocrites or even "bad citizens", especially in the strict sense in which no one obeys all laws although he accepts the general political order, and no one follows the extreme puritan version of pseudo-morality. They vote for laws they disobey. They defend principles they don't respect. They purport to abide by a pseudo-morality they don't abide by. They just love things like the double standard and dozens of rules and principles they don't have even a glimpse of explanation for. If someone tells you "I/we shouldn't do this", and then does it, or if he explains something leading to doublethink, you can be pretty sure he or she is one of them. Lewdness, obscenity and perversion* are their favorite anti-concepts.
- Nihilists. They reject all laws and rules, morality and pseudo-morality alike.
- Rational human beings. The Remnant. They abide by a coherent set of rational principles, such as Natural Law, the Golden Rule and Pareto-optimality.
So these are the categories. So now to correlations: people tend to be educated into good citizens or bad citizens. If for some reason (and the reason can be a bad reason leading to other bad correlated consequences) they reject the crap they've been filled with, they usually become nihilists. Therefore, the abiding with some stupid set of pseudo-principles is often correlated with positive qualities. Tough, innit.
*Good pretext to quote Szasz's definition:
Perversion: Sexual practice disapproved of by the speaker.

Cut the crap
Trained animals and programmed machines do what they're told. And most people, too.
Rational human beings, on the other hand, think. They ask why. They expect reasons. They follow a course of action they've found, through rational thought, "good", either good in the sense "good for them" or in the sense "morally good".
Of course, doing what you're told doesn't include only direct orders. It also includes laws, and it also includes "socially prevalent" pseudo-morality.

Un texte de fiction de 2002
Sombre.

Thoughts and talks
- I guess that marks the failure and end of my K strategy. Try r now?
- Can't talk more than a few minutes with friends without mentioning something about madonnas or imperfect information. (Yeah, I know, as Kirzner would say, we live in a world of uncertainty and we must cope with it every day. Every fuckin day.)
- Reply of the day "But Madonna is a whore !"
-
She was the female of the tribe. Si je voulais être le mâle-alpha, fallait me la faire (ou fallait être le mâle-alpha si je voulais me la faire ?) enfin j'me comprends quoi. While I'm talking about Scarface, there's this axiomatic truth (and not just for "this country", of course):
In this country, you gotta make the money first.
Then when you get the money, you get the power.
Then when you get the power, then you get the women.- Madonnes et salopes, mecs clean et mecs chelou.

One of my favourite sentences in one of my favourite books

Most things claimed as "morality" are in fact pseudo-moral rules that can be explained by demography and EP and were "rational" at some point but ain't anymore.

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a 'dismal science.' But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance.

- rubriques : comme les rubriques d'un journal, chaque article/post ne peut appartenir qu'à une seule rubrique, et le nombre de rubriques est assez restreint ;
- catégories : un article peut appartenir à plusieurs catégories, et il peut y avoir un nombre plus grand de catégories que de rubriques ;
- tags : un article est taggé de plusieurs tags, et il y a encore plus de tags que de catégories ;

del.icio.us delete?
(Some bugs with the method actually...) How to delete easily posts in deli.cio.us? Say, cancel an import of several hundred posts? Looked for a smart way, found none working. So here's a three-step solution. 1. First of all, the del.icio.us API allows to delete a post defined by its url. So, we need an urls list. You can get one by using the Firefox developer toolbar extension, with information/view link information. With a few replaces, you can then get a file with a list of urls (one per line). These are the URLs you're gonna delete, so check they're the right one. In my case, the idea was to cancel an import, so I saved my del.icio.us page of the "imported" tag. 2. With a simple PHP function, we make the links to point to the del.icio.us API deletes : $lines = file('one.txt'); for($linenumber=0;$linenumber<=100;$linenumber++) { echo '<a href="https://api.del.icio.us/v1/posts/delete?url='.$lines[$linenumber].'">'.$lines[$linenumber].'</a><br />'; } 3. You then get a list of links to click. You can then get some Firefox extension like Linky to click them all at once. to implement: have step 1. and step 2. done by PHP as well. Regarding step 1, there was a bug in deli.cio.us that echoed a XML error when trying to have the API get all "imported" tagged posts, but I guess we could get the links with some deli.cio.us RSS and then parse it with PHP...2006-09-26

», please....)

You can't fight procrastination
What you can do, is, say, have two jobs, or a job and studies, and have renounced most non-useful activities (e.g. TV). That way, you can procrastinate and do something useful, say, you're supposed to study, then, you can work instead and feel that delicious guilt of not doing what you're supposed to, while still not exactly wasting your time.

Gee

Rothbard wrong again
In addition to international politics, another field Rothbard would better have stayed out of: movies. Criticizing Martin Scorsese, one of my favourite movie directors, Rothbard may have the excuse of not having seen his more explicitly libertarian movies like Gangs of New York or Aviator, but his erroneous comments still need some reply.
Rothbard comments on The Godfather and Goodfellas
Contrast the ways in which Godfather and GoodFellas handle a common theme: the attempt of the leading Don to keep away from traffic in drugs, and the destruction wrought by succumbing to the temptation. In Godfather, one Mafia leader of the old school clearly and eloquently rejects traffic in drugs as immoral, in contrast to other venerable goods and services, such as liquor, gambling and "loan sharking." "Leave drugs to the animals — the niggers — they have no souls," he admonished. (All right, I never said that the Mafiosi were racially enlightened.) Here is a powerful and dramatic theme of keeping the old Mafia moral code as against the temptation of making a great deal of money in a technologically innovative field.
So, since when is entering into a technologically innovative field bad from a libertarian perspective? According to Rothbard, The Godfather mafia is good because they keep away from a market for irrational and racist reasons?
But how in contrast does GoodFellas handle this conflict? Don Cicero simply orders his gang to stay out of drugs, pointing only to the stiff sentences the Feds were handing out. And whereas in Godfather, everyone knows that disobedience to the Don will bring swift retribution, Conway, Hill and the other wiseguys disobey Don Cicero and nothing happens to them. What kind of Don is that?
What is so admirable about a Don that asks for blind obedience, and who probably kills anyone who doesn't follow his orders? (Actually, in the movie Don Cicero does punish Hill for not obeying him, by not helping him when he needs money, maybe even planning to kill him. But Rothbard's comment seems to imply that he didn't kill him, but should have.)
In contrast to the reasons given in Godfather, Don Cicero gives a very rational reason for not selling drugs, and turns out to have been right, since that is how Hill gets arrested. Notice here the libertarian message that Rothbard entirely missed: the gang is indeed criminal, agressing and killing people, stealing money. And what happens to them? Nothing! The state couldn't care less. The first time Hill gets arrested, it's for selling cigarets (in the real story it was actually for other reasons, but my comments are focusing on the movie). The first time the gang gets in real trouble is because a guy they beat up turned out to have some family at the FBI. So, kill, steal, as long as you don't harm anyone close to the State, the State doens't care. But of course, that was still a real crime, so they didn't get that much jail for it. As mentioned above, when Hill does get into real trouble with the state, is only once he has become an honest drug merchant.
So, the movie perfectly illustrates a libertarian theory of police action: its priorites are entirely opposite to that of honest people.
As for The Godfather, while an excellent movie indeed, it does not depict simple entrepreneurs, as Rothbard would suggest:
The key to The Godfathers and to success in the Mafia genre is the realization and dramatic portrayal of the fact that the Mafia, although leading a life outside the law, is, at its best, simply entrepreneurs and businessmen supplying the consumers with goods and services of which they have been unaccountably deprived by a Puritan WASP culture.
The Godfather himself, in The Godfather II, starts his gangster career by stealing and murdering. The fact that the Mafia does some legitimate business doesn't mean that all of its business is legitimate. The gangsters don't choose their endeavours according to libertarian principles, but choose rationally considering their high time preferences.
While these movies do indeed allow for a libertarian interpretation (or, at least, can serve to illustrate libertarian insights) it might be a little more subtler than supposing gangsters good and state bad, and then considering that The Godfather shows that (which it does not) and thus is a good movie, while Goodfellas doesn't show that, and thus is a bad movie.

Quotas
The collectivists that are so fond of quotas should really set their priorities straight. Instead of complaining about too few women or too few swiss-french in politics or councils or whatever, why aren't they outraged about far greater disproportions?
For instance, don't Jews get too many Nobel prizes? Isn't this an appalling discrimination against Blacks?
Or, even more unacceptable: Iceland, 300'000 people (0.005 % of the world population), and yet several miss world winners, and far too many trip-hop singers : Emiliana Torrini, Sigur Ros, mum, Bjork...

Today's endeavor
My powerful intelligence services sent me a coded report on her whereabouts. I recognize her from afar - she's the only cashier who doesn't look like one. She somehow manages to look hot even in the shop's uniform. Luckily, I found some item of interest to buy - would have been a shame if I had had to grab something random instead.
- Hello.
- Hey.
- Yeah?
I call her by her nickname.
- Yeah, that's me!
- Don't remember me? That party five months ago...
- Oh yeah, I do now. How you doing ?The next shop I wander into plays the music from Closer.
In other news, why does eating at McDonald's make me even more hungry?

Quick relapse
Just finished again The Pandora Directive. Did anyone else notice that there's James Earl Jones' voice in that one too? Actually a mere one sentence, but that's enough to make you wanna play UKM again, too. Anyway, once I finished it, I just had to see the other endings too. I guess that having to play it again several times would have been quite deadly for my student/work/social lives. Then I recalled that in the old days I had a pack of end-game savegames leading to the endings. I had deleted the game some time ago and reinstalled it recently on both my computers, therefore losing all my previous savegames, including these. After unsuccessfully trying to google them back, I rushed to my last hope, my sister's computer. Luckily, she had an old copy of my games folder on her hdd, featuring the aforementioned savegames. Phew!
Anyhow, I'd better upload them here, in case someone needs them as desperately as I did.

Present expectations
When a wee kid, loved playing with LEGOs, so imagined my future as a grown-up as having a big nice house, with rooms full of lego. Then as a teen, playing computer games, I imagined my grown-up future playing computer games the whole day (because I wouldn't have to go to school any more, dude!). Now I got some work, some money and a car. I imagine my future as having more work, more money, and more cars.

Pouah ! Damn TV network can't even deliver TCM in dual. Yesternight, good ol' classic movie, but with damn French subtitles. (I actually had trouble finding that link, because the TV program indicated the fuckin' french translation of the title) MTV used to be fully in english, then french subtitled, now dubbed in stinkin' French on top of good American.
Burn my TV I should.

The summer's over
You feel like it lasted forever and yet one second.
You feel like you travelled around the galaxy and yet you feel like not having moved from your chair. All the good memories—happened yestenight, or mere glimpses from past lives? Don't know anymore whether you're young or old, rich or poor, dumb or smart, geek or fashion. Do you know who you are, or are you not so sure? In the summer, things seemed a lot simpler.

Thinking of that episode of Dexter when his brain overheats

Korean Dies After Two Days of Computer Games
Wednesday, August 10, 2005
SEOUL, South Korea -- A 28-year-old South Korean man died of exhaustion in an Internet cafe after playing computer games non-stop for 49 hours, South Korean police said Wednesday.
Lee, a resident in the southern city of Taegu who was identified only by his last name, collapsed Friday after having eaten minimally and not sleeping, refusing to leave his keyboard while he played the battle simulation game Starcraft.
Lee was quickly moved to a hospital but died after a few hours, due to what doctors are presuming was a heart attack, police said.
Lee had been fired from his job last month because he kept missing work to play computer games, police said.
Computer games are enormously popular in South Korea, home to professional gamers who earn big money through sponsorships and television stations devoted to broadcasting matches. (FoxNews)
Starcraft. Brings up good memories. Still the best strategy game around. By the way Diablo II's new ladder season has begun. Oh but yeah, I've quitted, right.

Grrr
My GDM-F520 has stopped making noise. Humidity might be to blame, so basically if I don't use it often enough it doesn't heat enough to dry. Good excuse for not leaving the computer. Speaking of good excuses, I still claim being on Eastern Time as the reason for going to sleep at 5-6 am. But I was talking about my GDM-F520. So my GeForce4's fan fell off. Was actually held by some lame plastic pieces. While my father repairs it, I'm stuck with an old Matrox of his, which is so bad I have to choose between 1280*1024 in 256 colors and 60 Hz and 1024*768 in high color and 85 Hz (I usually run 1280*1024 in True Color at 85 Hz). Both look awful, but chose the latter.

J'me casse et retourne à Néïmo.

Dune games
Ok, so beyond the adventure/strategy Dune game, there are the Dune RTS games:
- Dune 2. Released under two different subtitles, "The battle for arrakis" and "The building of a dynasty". Not sure if any differences between the two. Basically, with Warcraft, created the RTS genre. Cumbersome interface, good gameplay. The classic.
- Super Dune 2. Modification for the previous, allowing you to play the Fremen, the Sardaukar and the "mercenaries".
- Arrakis. Remake of Dune 2, using C&C's excellent interface, and voices... Appalling graphics.
- Dune 2000. Remake of Dune 2, using modern interface. Unconvincing storyline added, not really interesting, though, worth mentioning, the appearance of John Rhys-Davies as one of the actors
- Emperor: Battle for Dune. Westwood's first try in 3D RTS, after the technical regression of Red Alert 2. Gameplay and storyline quite bad.

Dune
Years after having enjoyed the floppy version, I finally got a chance to play the cd version of Dune! Not only is there better music and voices, plus some videos, but many of the in-game graphics are different too: the desert, the palace... (The screenshot on the linked site is from the floppy disk version.) The result is graphically even more impressive.
As for the game, well, the mix of adventure and strategy genres is quite rare. Only Monkey Island 3 comes to mind as similar in that respect, whereas strategy/tactical games are quite common (X-Com, HOMM series), action/rpg, rpg/adventure, etc, others are not so common like action/adventure (Full Throttle), strategy/action (Dungeon Keeper), however strategy/adventure still seems the most original to me.
Knowing the game by heart now, took only a few hours to finish. The Dune ambiance is always great to get into.

Well, Armies of Exigo doesn't look that bad. The game is a copy of Warcraft III even in most details. However, the graphics are better, and there's the "dual level" plus. The idea ain't new, was already used in the otherwise quite crappy HOMM3, where it was called "subterranean level". The implementation is quite nice, with the possibility of seeing the two levels on two different mini-maps. Certainly does add quite an exhilarating thrill, and interesting strategic options.

Thoughts on music
At one point you've got it, and then you lose it.
The latest Orb, Bicycles & Tricycles is weak. Their old stuff was better.
Voyage into Paradise and Bless You weren't that good already. Actually, at least for me, their best disc is the rare 1996 Peel Sessions, featuring their best mix of OOBE and a remix of Iggy Pop's No Fun.
Well, there goes Orb. Very common, same with ADF, FSOL... As a counterexample, Madonna seems to be slowly learning how to sing so her latest album sucks less than the previous.

WoW
Saw latest World of Wacraft trailer. Well, does look awesome. Usually I've been buying Blizzard's games as soon as they were out, and this one looks even better than the previous. But... there's gonna be a monthly fee. Don't wanna pay monthly fees. The game looks even more addictive than D2, so add the fact that when you pay monthly for it you wanna use it a lot to get a good run for your money.... So, nay, wouldnae be wise to fall for this game.

Comparing
Installed a new OS. So, reinstalling programs.
- Opera: no reinstall needed. Copy the Opera folder on the new disk. Launch Opera. Resume reading opened articles in multiple tabs, where you stopped. That's all.
- IE crap: reinstall IE 6. The install program will try to go online, I don't even wanna know why. Glad to have a firewall. Compulsory reboot. Delete the stupid quick launch bar icons it made without asking. Install SP1. Compulsory reboot. Delete the stupid quick launch bar icons it made without asking. Reconfigure everything. And you still get the same crap which doesn't give a damn about W3C specifications, ignores most of CSS2 (out since 1998, too recent I guesss....), hasn't got tabbed browsing, doesn't remember what you were reading when you quitted, not even to mention where it was on the page, misinterprets altenative style sheets, etc, etc.

TV

Culture's dead
I used to go quite often to the movies, now it's like once a year for The Lord of the Rings, though I guess there won't be a fourth. So the next time I'll be in a cinema it'll probably be for Star Wars Episode III.
Whenever I watch trailers for the upcoming movies, I don't see anything new. No new point whatsoever. No art. The same shite over and over, actually I can barely stand to watch them trailers. Even the one movie that didn't look that bad from the trailers, Troy, was unoriginal, uninteresting, poorly acted.
Fortunately, there's DVDs. All the real movies. Almost got all of Kubrick's movies, Fritz Lang's M and Dr. Mabuse, Sergio Leone's capolavori Once Upon a time in the west and the good the bad and the ugly. Will buy "for a handful of dollar"s when I see it.
Then there's games. Far Cry sucks. Feels like playing Half-Life all over again. Sure, the graphics are nice, but all of this has already been done. What non-technical progess did the gaming industry make since the Tex Murphy Series ? Since Diablo II ? Since Max Payne ? And, more importantly, are really today's games more fun to play than Full Throttle or UFO or Command & Conquer ? HOMM2 is way better than HOMM3, and C&C is way better than Tiberian Sun or Red Alert II.UPDATE : Far Cry's great, and I almost forgot all the great recent games like Vice City.
Well, at least there's music. There the technology has really done great things, I mean guys like Mozart or Dvorak were great artists, however I don't like the sound of some of the old instruments. Gee, imagine Mozart with a synth, now that would be something. Anyway, yeah, music feels like one domain where there still might be some creation.

Cleaning mice. Miss my 21' screen, wasn't working no more, so send it for repair. Would be useful for switching between my two computers, it got a 1-2 input select.

Authoritarianism
Used to be addicted to Diablo II. Then quit. Then got back to it with the new patch 1.10. Quit again with the death of Troglodyte, my werebear-druid. Used to play Utopia for some time. I was wondering whether I should go back to it again. Seems though that even when I try to make this an unpolitical blog, annoying politics are everywhere. The game site had a big ad in the middle of the page, not even a discreet banner, leading to this anti-drug-fascists propaganda site, giving some "advices" for parents. Right.
- Monitor what your kids are watching on TV.
- Monitor their use of the Internet.
- Put restrictions on CDs they buy.
- Know where your kids are after school and during weekends.
- Be told the truth about your teenager's whereabouts.
- Be aware of your teenager's academic performance.
- Impose a curfew.
- Make it clear that you would be ''extremely upset'' if your teen used Marijuana.
- Eat dinner with your teen six or seven nights a week.
- Turn the TV off during dinner.
- Assign regular chores for your teen.
- Have an adult present when the teen comes home from school.
What we see here is exactly the same way of thinking that, applied to a state, is totalitarianism. The link between the two seems quite obvious. I have trouble imagining someone ready to play big brother on his kids but reluctant to make the state do the same. Furthermore, educating kids in an authoritarian way, rejecting personal responsibility, will eventually raise irresponsible citizens, who, once adults, without their parents telling them what to do anymore, will turn expectantly to the state.
Anyhow. Guess I won't be playing Utopia after all, if the game organizers are accomplices with those kind of people.

Equilibrium
Following the advice of the ASC forum, just saw Equilibrium. Great. Some scenes were clearly inspired by Metropolis, the music ambiance was resembling Dark City, but allaround quite original motive with an excellent acting and directing. Best science fiction movie since a long time. No blatantly cheap philosophy like in the matrix series. Cascading ending like in good ol' Brazil. A bit of Escape from LA ambiance too.
